Laser Hair Removal on Dark Skin

Practically everything has been written on the subject of laser hair removal, which remains one of the prime uses of esthetic laser treatment. It offers a quick, effective, allergy-free and relatively painless procedure that leaves no scar and does not damage the pores of the skin even on darker phototypes as long as the treatment is performed by the right laser.

Many institutes offer laser hair removal, it is important to remember that only doctors - in France - are authorized to use Class-IV lasers, which, because of their high power, are the only ones to combine safety and long-lasting results.

Permanent Hair Removal on black Skin

The Centre Laser Sorbonne medical team will suggest an appointment with one of our doctors. During this free initial visit he or she will speak with you and perhaps give you a test to make sure that nothing stands in the way of your treatment. You will receive answers to any questions you may have on lasers especially on darker skin.

In accordance with French law concerning medical-class lasers, the doctor will give you an estimate with an informed consent form.

This estimate will specify the number of sessions, a schedule, the price of each session and the equipment to be used.

At the Centre Laser Sorbonne we use The Cynosure Nd:Yag LP - ACCLAIM, specifically on darker phototypes.

A Typical Hair Removal Session on black Skin

The length of the session varies, as it depends on the size of the area to be treated. It may last anywhere from ten minutes to an hour and a half for a single area.

The spacing between sessions becomes progressively longer during treatment. The number of sessions also varies, depending on the area treated and also on the patient. Your doctor will provide more-specific information when he or she gives you your personalized estimate at your first visit.

The area to be treated must be carefully shaved before the session so that the hair tip is just above skin level (1 mm maximum). Waxing may be performed not less than eight days before the laser session. However, it is recommended that temporary hair removal be avoided before your initial consultation so that the doctor may be able to determine the appropriate treatment and parameters.

The doctor sweeps the area carefully, using the appropriate handpiece. The epidermis is cooled by cold air during the treatment. The session is not particularly painful, aside from heat and a momentary pricking sensation.

During the session the follicles in the anagen (active growth) phase will be destroyed. Those in the dormant phase need to be targeted later, when they resume active growth. A series of sessions is therefore necessary to eliminate all the hairs. The number of sessions and their length depend on the size of the area treated and the hair-growth cycle of that area. As an indication, however, for the great majority of cases, satisfactory results are achieved in five to six sessions scheduled over the course of a little more than a year. The doctor of the Centre may eventually recommend a thermolysis session for any stubborn hairs that might remain.

Laser Hair Removal on black Skin : Potential Counter-Indications

The principle of laser hair removal is simple. The beam sweeps the area to be treated. The wavelength is selected to target melanin, the color pigment of the hair. The dark hairs absorb the rays, which destroy the bulb and the bulge.

This brief explanation allows us to specify the limits of laser action and potential counter-indications.

When a hair is poor in melanin (white or bleached hairs, for example), the laser has no effect.

On the other hand, when the skin is tanned by the sun or UV treatment, laser is counter-indicated, as the melanin in the skin, rather than the bulb, would become the laser’s target.

With darker complexions, certain precautions need to be taken.

The use of medications that affect the photosensitivity of the skin may also counter-indicate treatment.

Finally, pregnancy constitutes a counter-indication as a matter of principle, as is the case for all laser treatments.

After Your Laser Hair Removal Session …

An erythema (redness) and a light edema (swelling) appear in a few minutes and disappear within hours. Tiny scabs may form at the base of the hairs ; they will disappear a few days later.

A hydrating cream is applied at the end of the session. The skin must not be exposed to the sun for a month after any session.

Laser Hair Removal on black Skin Price

The price is determined by the size of the area to be treated and therefore the length of each session. The treatment of several areas in the same session allows for a price reduction.
